The Main Continent (Thentao)
The Main continent before the wars had several nations along its northern shore. The most prominent of these was Backbone, a semi-feudal Egyptian society(!). The others were Lowland (a true Greek republic, complete with a Senate), Resh (a theocracy devoted to the Sumerian gods), the elven “kingdoms” of Pleven, and the dwarven kingdom of Blanan. Without exception, these countries were decimated in fifteen years of war (1090-1105). Lowland collapsed from within due primarily to the influence of Pelham, “The Quiet Wizard”. The elves and Backbone both fell to a massive invasion of orcs led by The Dark Mage's Demonwraiths. The dwarves of Blanan were entombed for a decade by the trickery of an evil wizard (a defeat which, ironically, saved them from the wars).
Now, the old kingdom of Backbone has been resettled – with help from Resh, the only north coast kingdom to survive mostly intact. As the orcs have never been good with boats, The King's Island emerged from under the storm cloud mostly intact and it has been fully resettled.
In the north-eastern corner (beyond "Elfland") is a region known as Cheraî (aka “The Fifth Kingdom”). This area originally housed an intentionally isolated group of people. However, refugee resettlements during the war, and portal activity since has done much to open this society up.
Across the mountains to the south is The Sea of Sand, a desert region populated by several relatively peaceful tribes of nomads. Along the western coast is Mosaî. Both of these societies are remnants of the mighty Arral Empire from the second age.
On the southern coast of the Main continent is a nation called Teleme (or to the Northerners, simply “The Southlands”). The natives of Teleme are akin to the natives of Central America, yet the nation is ruled by settlers primarily from Backbone and Lowland. In fact, the highly structured government and legal system are based on the tradition that the king of Backbone is their rightful sovereign. As a practical matter, however, the country is ruled by a Governor and the ties to the north are only ceremonial.
Under the mountains south of Pleven is the Underdark, a dangerous pocket of the world, home to the Drow, Deep Gnomes, Kuo-Toa, Illithid, and many other races too numerous to mention.
To the west of Teleme, about midway along the southern coast of Thentao, is Arela, a jungle-like river valley where dark-skinned humans live. Reports vary from these people being cannibalistic to peace-loving artists.
Further west is Dumaka, a mountainous society of humans who are rumored to use magic constantly (and casually) in their everyday lives.
Other, smaller population centers exist around the continent, but they are too numerous to mention here.
