The Demonwraiths

Twelve creatures of undead who were originally the Dark Mage's mortal servants in the second age. They led the mage's armies against Backbone and Pleven and were defeated with him in 1105.

Overview

Created by the Dark Mage at the beginning of the second age, these undead lords have a strong connection to the lower planes and are thus considered both undead and demons. Thus the name.

Originally, these creatures were Nakam Alkat's closest followers and upon their death, they were granted their demonwraith form by the Dark Mage (with the help of Hades).

Each has retained all of their original powers and skills from their mortal form, and with these have gained numerous magical immunities and powers that are normally associated with being undead. Even in their physical forms, only magical weapons can cause them harm.

All twelve Demonwraiths were subdued and sent to their original home plane late in the wars with Nakam Alkat just before the destruction of the world at the end of the Second Age. Their places of death were sealed by the good magicians of the time, but done in a hasty fashion and the seals lasted only until the end of the eleventh century in the Third Age.

After the final confrontation between Bast and Hades in the year 1105 (Age III), the Demonwraiths were destroyed along with their master, Nakam Alkat. Whether they may ever be reconstructed is a point of some debate, though to do so would almost certainly draw the attention of more than one hostile deity.

Timeline

  • II:25, Jan 28: Nakam Alkat's tomb near the heaven spire is opened by the elves. The mage kills all the elves that witnessed him and flys to his castle.
  • II:87, Sep 16: Nakam Alkat begins creating the Demonwraith medallions and sceptres.
  • II:93, Jan 3: In an evil ceremony, the mage declares his presence and creates (with the help of Hades) the 12 Demonwraiths.
  • II:131, May 1: Nakam Alkat is defeated and is forced into dormancy. His master medallion is destroyed, which in turn destroys the 12 slave medallions, stunning the Demonwraiths. Seven are killed outright in battle. One (#5) was carefully imprisoned and the remaining four fled to Nakam Alkat's castle. There they remained for over fifteen years.
  • II:146, Sep 25: The four remaining Demonwraiths (#2, 7, 8, and 11) attempt to regain some of their lost power by sacrificing the king of the spire kingdom. They fail and are imprisoned as thoroughly as was #5.

At this point, the Demonwraiths are split into two groups: The five and the seven. The five consist of #5 and the four imprisoned in 146. These five had powerful magics used against them which would prevent their escape. The remaining seven, however, were killed in a “normal” fashion and could be released with little effort. The fact that they remained in this state until the year 1656 was amazing indeed.

  • II:1656, Apr 2: A vain and power-hungry wizard, after much research, uncovers one of the Demonwraith sceptres and successfully summons #4.
  • II:1656, Sep 7: Demonwraith #4, fully recovered from his imprisonment, kills the wizard who released him and begins locating the remaining sceptres.
  • II:1660, May 14: Demonwraith #4 successfully frees the last of the seven. The seven then begin the much more difficult task of reviving their master.
  • II:1719, Dec 13: Nakam Alkat is released from his tomb when the master sceptre is uncovered.
  • II:1749, Aug 17: Nakam Alkat uncovers the last of the remaining sceptres, though is still unable to revive the five imprisoned Demonwraiths.
  • II:1775, Jul 24: With the aid of the evil trio of might, Nakam Alkat and the seven succeed in a series of lightning-swift raids on the five tombs. The five are released and the Demonwraiths are back in full strength.
  • II:1784, Dec 14: After a long, careful study of the world, its strengths and weaknesses, Nakam Alkat, the 12 Demonwraiths, and their newly-amassed armies begin the Second World War.
  • II:1883, Dec 16: After nearly a hundred years of war, Nakam Alkat has almost succeeded in his conquest when five of his Demonwraiths were defeated and their sceptres taken.
  • II:1885, Jun 4: Demonwraith #6 attempts to revive two of the imprisoned five. He fails and is imprisoned himself.
  • II:1885, Oct 10: In another great defeat, all but one of the remaining Demonwraiths are defeated. Only Nakam Alkat and #2 remain.
  • II:1886, Sep 21: The master sceptre is stolen and #2 is forced into dormancy. Nakam Alkat begins losing his wars.
  • II:1898, Mar 29: Fearing he will lose his war, Nakam Alkat makes a pact with the one-eye to use orc troops. The “orc fire” begins.
  • II:1906, Jun 2: All but the spire kingdom have fallen to Nakam Alkat and the orcs.
  • II:1912, Oct 20: Using the power of the heaven spire, the orcs are driven back from the spire kingdom (temporarily).
  • II:1919, Mar 12: Qôc Ranaî inherits the title of one-eye, the gem of Gruumsh, and the sagging orc-fire armies.
  • II:1929, Feb 19: As the orc-fire has lost much of its power, Nakam Alkat refuses his promises to the orcs. Qôc Ranaî violently opposes this and is quickly killed. Gruumsh is angered and appears. Nakam Alkat “defeats” him (with the aid of Hades) and Gruumsh smites his castle with a meteor. The end of the Second Age.
  • III:1092, Mar 13: Demonwraith #5 is awakened by Karelia and Rana.
