Recycling Gone Bad

Date: November 7, 2014
Characters in attendance: Hex, 99, Quantum, Shimmer, Lady Paladin
Experience awarded: 1

The fallout from the alien attack wasn't as bad as expected. The public believed the “actual video” that was provided by the Secret Government Agency, that showed a giant mutant beast killing all of those innocent people. The members of Rose City Five backed up the claim, but gave almost no interviews or discussed the incident in public. Luckily for them, their pal Billy Dugan hasn't interviewed them about it, instead having a different reporter do it.

There is discussion on a new Seattle superhero team, also sponsored by Daniel Dunlap and the Five Foundation. Six members, the name of the group is the Seattle Six. Their members are: * Isotron, a male energy projector * Tungsten, a male brick * Centuria, an older female with a variety of powers * Super Star, a female flying energy projector * Ford, a multipurpose robot (the name is short for Free-Roaming Robotic Device) * Frightener, a creature that looks like a werewolf

The team gets a call from the police, asking for their help. There are reports of workers disappearing from a recycling company in North Plains that handles all of the organic food waste from Portland residents. The police could not find any clues, and asked the team to look into it, in case it was some supervillain. The team investigates.

Out at the recycling plant, inside the huge pole barn there are many piles of organic food waste, and the smell is horrible. The team investigates but doesn't find any clues. But something is happening; the piles start quivering, then merge together into a huge pile, fifty feet across, rumbling and proclaiming that it is alive, and needs to feed. The fight begins.

Heap is a mountain of refuse, and after quite a while of beating it down, they bash it into submission. Inside were the bodies of the five workers that had disappeared, and they were all still alive. The team called for an ambulance, but all of the cell phone circuits were busy. Thinking something was up, Quantum flies straight home, while the rest of the team take the victims into Hillsboro to the hospital.

All of the heroes discover the reason for the phone outage: there has been a major… “incident”. TV news shows the unfolding disaster: a huge area in downtown Seattle has disappeared, and has been replaced by tall stone walls, thatch-roofed houses, and an actual stone castle. All of the original buildings are gone. The team recognizes the architecture: it is the same fantasy-style buildings as they saw when they passed through the portal to the alternate city of Port Landing.

GM's Notes:

I wanted a huge, super-tough monster to fight the good guys. Heap was JoAnn's idea (I get a lot of good ideas from her) after taking another container of food waste out to the recycling bin. I didn't realize that the characters can really deal the damage, especially after spending some of their experience points. Having all of the attacks area of effect, and giving him a DCV of 0, made sure that everyone was always hitting.

The ending bit, with the huge event, was because I wanted something big, earth shattering, taking several episodes. All the comics have big crossovers, Secret Wars, Crisis on Infinite Earths, etc., so I wanted one for myself.
