Origin story (5 January 2006)
A community in the deep, and a gnome child who wakes screaming in the dark, with a horrific vision bursting in his mind. Earthquakes. Lava. Their cavern collapsing, admitting floods, wind, rain and lightning from the world above. They die by the thousands, and still it does not stop. The sky splits, and stone falls from the sky. All manner of wild beasts, driven insane, turn upon each other and all other beings. Flint sees it, is crushed by it, overthrown by it. And his screams do not end.
Priests are summoned, and they close Flint's mind to the power of the vision. They agree the omen is strong, but wonder why the priests remain blind to it. They reason this came to Flint alone and thus … he must be the key. After preparing him for the world Up Top, they send him out. He must learn how to control these powerful forces, before the End comes. He must wander from land to land, and in turn master the rock that shakes, the fire that roars from above and below, the waters that surge, the winds that howl. He, as no other before him, must find mastery over the powers that would end them.
He has centuries before him, and if he fails, he must find another to take the yoke. He sets his will against foes, the elements, those who would bring evil, and even death itself, until the End.
