The Demonwraiths

Twelve creatures of undead who were originally the Dark Mage's mortal servants in the second age. They led the mage's armies against Backbone and Pleven and were defeated with him in 1105.

Overview

Created by the Dark Mage at the beginning of the second age, these undead lords have a strong connection to the lower planes and are thus considered both undead and demons. Thus the name.

Originally, these creatures were Nakam Alkat's closest followers and upon their death, they were granted their demonwraith form by the Dark Mage (with the help of Hades).

Each has retained all of their original powers and skills from their mortal form, and with these have gained numerous magical immunities and powers that are normally associated with being undead. Even in their physical forms, only magical weapons can cause them harm.

All twelve Demonwraiths were subdued and sent to their original home plane late in the wars with Nakam Alkat just before the destruction of the world at the end of the Second Age. Their places of death were sealed by the good magicians of the time, but done in a hasty fashion and the seals lasted only until the end of the eleventh century in the Third Age.

After the final confrontation between Bast and Hades in the year 1105 (Age III), the Demonwraiths were destroyed along with their master, Nakam Alkat. Whether they may ever be reconstructed is a point of some debate, though to do so would almost certainly draw the attention of more than one hostile deity.

Timeline

At this point, the Demonwraiths are split into two groups: The five and the seven. The five consist of #5 and the four imprisoned in 146. These five had powerful magics used against them which would prevent their escape. The remaining seven, however, were killed in a “normal” fashion and could be released with little effort. The fact that they remained in this state until the year 1656 was amazing indeed.
